Mental Health (Behavioral Health)

SAMHSA describes behavioral health as the promotion of mental health, resilience and wellbeing; the treatment of mental and substance use disorders; and the support of those who experience and/or are in recovery from these conditions; along with their families and communities.

The Mental Health action team aims to decrease stigma associated with mental illness through education, awareness, and community connection to local resources.

Accomplishments and Current Projects:

  • Mental Health Provider Directory
  • Educational trainings: MHFA (Mental Health First Aid), ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training), CALM (Counseling on Access to Lethal Means), START (self-paced online module), and firearm safety trainings
  • Distribution of free gun locks
  • Annual Mental Health Awareness Campaigns, with each campaign focusing on high risk groups and needs in Pitt County
  • Substance use education through awareness events and representation from those with lived experience

Ongoing Focus:

  • Decrease stigma around mental illness
  • Increase knowledge of issues associated with mental illness through MHFA, ASIST, CALM, START, and firearm safety trainings
  • Engage in opportunities to learn from those with lived experience
  • Ensure diverse perspectives on the Mental Health Initiative work group

The Mental Health Action team meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the month from 3pm-4:30pm.
